I live in Lincoln, Nebraska, and I don't diary much but have been a member of this community since 2003. The one thing I can say about Lincoln is it's got a great scene, lots of super NICE people (termed 'Nebraska Nice'), plus Lincoln is a little liberal oasis in a sea of red (not talking about cornhuskers).
A woman was attacked in her home early this morning 7/22. Men wearing masks entered her home, tied her up with zip ties, and brutalized her. Lincoln Police Department isn't giving up many details, but the facebook page for tonight's vigil against violence has more info. from friends of the victim. Basically, the words 'cunt' 'dyke' and 'fag' were carved into her face and body. Before they left, they poured gasoline and tried to set the house on fire, but luckily they failed. The woman escaped and ran for help. She is currently recovering.
Here is a pic of the victim's basement wall.
This is a devastating thing to happen in our mostly peaceful community, and many many heavy hearts go out to the victim. Currently there is a grass roots effort and a candle light vigil against violence will happen at our state capital at 9pm. The QLGBTA community in Lincoln is coming together to show support, over 500 people are expected to attend the vigil (per the facebook page).
In addition, the victim doesn't have health insurance, a bank account is being established. I'm going to look into a paypal account as well and will update here with more info. and pictures.
