It's coming onto August and with the Olympics and both conventions still in the works, setting up a new narrative is probably counter-productive and would be lost in the noise anyhow. That said in September the one narrative that hasn't gotten nearly enough attention is what is it that Mormons and Mitt Romney actually believe?
I do feel that a candidate's religious beliefs are absolutely fair topics during an election, especially for the office of POTUS as if elected they will act as CINC of our armed forces and have the launch codes to our nuclear devices. Their religious beliefs tell us something of how they will respond to crisis and what moral foundations they will be using to make decisions that can be quite literally life and death. Presidents have always referenced faith and God while in office and as such it is absolutely fair game.

First of all let's understand what sources Mormons and Mitt Romney believe reveal the word and will of God. Well there are four actually, the first of course being The Bible or at least "as far as it is translated correctly". Which verses have not been translated correctly? It depends on who you ask. Source two? The Book of Mormon, which Joseph Smith claims to have translated from Golden Plates that the angel Moroni (disappointingly not Roman Moroni of Johnny Dangerously fame: "you farggin ice-holes!") directed him to buried near his home in Upstate New York. He accomplished the translation using stone eyeglasses while reading the texts that he had placed in the bottom of a top hat. Having finished the translation he allowed eleven people to actually see the plates, all of whom were either close friends, family members or financial backers of Smith. Later testimony from one of the witnesses, Martin Harris stated that eight of the "witnesses" didnt actually witness anything but were persuaded to sign testimony that they had and almost all of them had falling outs with Smith later in life. All of this of course means that according to Smith that the Book of Mormon is "the most correct book" on Earth and brings its adherents closer to the true word and will of God than any other. Third is the Doctrine and Covenants which contains a series of lectures setting out church doctrines and revelations made by God to Joseph Smith. Lastly we have Pearl of Great Price which includes the Book of Moses and Book of Abraham which "correct" teachings and prophecies in the traditional Bible that were mis-translated and also add materials and information that Joseph Smith found in ancient papyri he managed to somehow acquire, much like the Golden Plates.
It would be remiss of me not to note at this time that Smith was imprisoned more than once for fraud. Given the totally plausible and convincing arguments for the veracity of his claims, this would appear to be a simple abberation.
So what do Mormons believe about God? Well first of all God was just a flesh and blood dude like the rest of us. You see he wasn't always a Supreme Being (begging the elephant on steroids question of who created God but whatever) and worked his way up the ladder through hard work and righteous living; the American Dream at its finest it would seem. Oh yeah, and that whole Jesus virgin birth thing? Not so much as God "knew" Mary if you know what I mean, presumably swinging by for some Courvoisier, Barry White and Savior conception. Once done he swung back to his bachelor planet (yes planet) and if you are extra special good you too can become a God and have your very own planet to rule. In other words the one true God is more like a team leader at AmWay.
Well what about facts? I mean facts are important right? Well they don't really worry about those too much. Mormon doctrine states that your feelings are God's way of sorting out truth from lies so facts that make you feel good must be true and those that feel bad are lies. Say someone were to tell you that Joseph Smith was a con man and fraud who made up an entire religion out of thin air? Well that makes you feel bad and as such can't be true. Physics, chemistry, geology, climatology, biology, genetics et al can all take a hike because if it feels wrong its a lie and if it feels right it is true. This explains a lot about why 42 year old men with a harem of teen brides are confident of God's plan for them.
But that's crazy you say? How can anyone believe that nonsense? Well duh, it's not like the Prophets of LDS shoild be taken literally ... or at least in that we should hold them to anything they say or claim. You see when a Prophet says something wrong it is only because they weren't inspired at the time and were merely speaking as fallible humans. As a matter of fact a Prophet can pretty much change any doctrine any time they feel like it through an inspired revelation.
I could go on but I won't. I also want to state that as an atheist I do not find the Mormon faith any odder than the rest other than I realy am at a loss as to how its adherents don't see Charlatan written all over it. I do feel however that telling the electorate what exactly it is that Mitt Romney believes and what his church says would make him pretty much unelectable. How could Evangelicals walk into a booth and pull a lever for someone who believes this stuff? Now I know some will say that doing this opens the door for the Republicans to drag out Reverend Wright again but there is a huge difference. Wright is old news and just one guy that Obama publically denounced. This is Romney's entire church and its doctrine. If this isn't a topic in September and October then Democrats have completely missed the boat.
