Former Sec Def Robert Gates' (yes, also Bush Sr's Robert Gates) deputy in the Middle East had this to say about Romney:
Former deputy assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East Colin Kahl said Romney’s visit to three of America’s closest allies should have been “easy” to avoid missteps.
“It’s not that Romney struck out against a major league pitcher. I mean, here he struck out playing tee ball,” Kahl said.
This is the perfect analogy for the Romney campaign, in fact possibly Romney's entire career.
Romney has had life tee'd up for him. Every step he's taken in life has been subsidized by his family's wealth and personal connections. He's never played a game of major league ball, he's never had to.
I think former Deputy Secretary Kahl has hit it out of the park here.
Republicans have every gaffe and every important blunder 'fair and balanced' out for them. Even now, after Romney offends all of Britain and most of the Middle East with racist, inept, dangerous weakness masquerading as strength, the media is trying to convince America that his unprecedented failure overseas is somehow not important or irrelevant because "people aren't paying attention."
Of course it's the media's job to write stories that get people's attention, but let's pretend the media doesn't know this (cough, every irresponsibly horse-race enticing misquoted anti-Obama headline about "building this" to the contrary of course).
Obviously the US media goes out of their way to tee things up for ridiculously incompetent candidates like Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney, going so far as to print misquoted lies about the president since there's nothing else negative to say about him that week.
But even still, Republicans continue to whiff. Sarah Palin and John McCain whiffed in 2008. And now Mitt Romney just struck out to a plastic stick on a plastic base. We get it, Mitt. You hate the barely sentient plastic stick teeing up your campaign for you because you still can't hit the ball and it's making you look ridiculous. But it's time to man up. Stop blaming the plastic tee ball stick we call media coverage of Republicans. Barack Obama is hitting pro league homers day in day out and all you've got left is beating up on a plastic stick we call the 4th Estate? You're a child, Mitt, a temper tantrum having child embarrassed by your failure. We expect that from 8 year olds and we comfort them. From you it just sounds sad and pathetic.
