As most readers know, Hector Balderas recently lost to Martin Heinrich, the next Senator from New Mexico. But he sure did give it a very interesting run indeed.
Way back in August 2011, Mr. Balderas caught my attention as a gutsy and savvy politician: he came out for marriage equality (pun intended). I used to belong to the Gay/Straight Alliance at my last school, so this really caught my attention.
Since Mr. Balderas is a staunch supporter of civil rights, this was a no-brainer for him. However, knowing about the BS stereotype of hispanics on social issues, I remember thinking that the compliant NM press would utterly destroy him. Instead, there was a perplexing silence on the issue, followed shortly by Mr. Heinrich crying out "Uh, me too!" (good for you, BTW!).
So, in summation:
Hector Balderas provided ethical guidance on a very important issue, standing on principle, thus creating a safe environment that allowed others the chance to be persuaded. Isn't that the very definition of "leadership"?
I know I couldn't have been prouder to be an American and a New Mexican!
Of course, this was by no means the only reason that I support him. I am certainly not a one issue person. So I did what any sensible, science-embracing, technology-loving, Progressive Math Nerd would do:
I went to his website.

NOTE: I will be having the high honor of discussing Mr. Balderas on the issues in future posts.
