No matter how low someone's taxes are, they
won't hire help until they sell more product.
John-
last week I was discussing taxes with a 28-
year-old woman. she's on welfare and
Medicaid and has two children. she was upset
that she actually had to wake up before noon
that day but she was excited because she's
had a new baby this year and this year should
get over $4000 back in taxes. she only got
$3000 last year. she isn't employed and it
really doesn't seem that she's trying to get
that way. a couple of years ago I offered
another woman a job at very reasonable
wage. she couldn't take it because she made
more money staying home with her two
children then she would working for me by
the time she got welfare and food stamps and
Medicaid. until the government starts
rewarding people for productivity instead of
sitting at home I don't think our problems are
going to get any better.

Well, getting more for doing less, rather than
getting less for doing more of the hard work,
is the actual incentive just a little higher up
on the socio-economic ladder. For a large
swath of the general public, & for a variety of
reasons, upward mobility ends at or near
subsistence only wages. & when U
understand that those wages will earn u less
overall, than welfare does, it's hard to blame
someone for choosing that. However,
knowing this doesnt make it sting any less
when I'm in line at the grocery, behind a able-
bodied food stamp recipient who will be
eating much better than me & my family. But I have really struggled with this, & instead of
an indictment of a welfare system that
decides eligibility based on poverty
definitions, i see it as more of an indictment
on a culture & business environment that
rewards immoral behavior, greed, selfishness,
thru profit, but expects the growing numbers
at the bottom to behave just the opposite.
That said, if everyone had access to
healthcare, it would no longer be a benefit
that only welfare provided, making welfare
less seductive as opposed to working. If
wages were better, the same would be true as
well. Instead of taking away things we all
know are necessary for living, why dont we
insure everyone who DOES work, have at least
that much. i know it seems easier to despise the
poor for taking handouts, but as a democratic
society, we have the ability to reward
whatever we choose to. It's a more difficult
task, but carrots are just as effective as sticks,
even when sticks are our knee-jerk response.
