I for one do not believe that most Republican lawmakers really care about unborn children that much, if they did then they would not be spending so much effort into taking food out of poor children's mouths.
What I do believe is, Republican legislators in both the United States Congress and in state houses across the country, really want is to control women's bodies. This is just a speculation here but it seems there are still many men, who look upon women as though they are property, or at least should be.
Recently a certain lawmaker made the news because he inadvertently revealed his personal thoughts about rape, which really is the personal thoughts of many of the GOP, but his mistake was to reveal what he really thought, instead of what the GOP's talking points are. Bad boy, out you Go!
That certain lawmaker is Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo) who happens to be the Republican's Primary choice to run against Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo) for her seat in the U.S. Senate. Rep. Akins words were:
"It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare,” This would be referring to the woman conceiving after the rape "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something, I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child."
The Republican Party's position on Abortion gives us insight into Rep. Akins's way of thinking and the thinking of many of his conservative colleagues. The 2012 RNC's platform includes a constitutional ban on abortions, even in instances of rape or incest, and the only exception being, if a woman's life is endanger. I wonder how long it will be that even that exception will not be part of their platform.
Mitt Romney on the other hand, has said that his administration would not oppose exceptions for abortions in cases of rape, incest, and when a woman's health is, endanger. Romney's position on abortion, like many of his positions has changed dramatically since he decided to run for president on the Republican ticket. Oh yes, let us not forget about the "Etch a Sketch" remark from a campaign aide of his, this must be one of those moments to shake, shake, shake.
The Romney campaign and many prominent Republicans have voiced their opposition to Rep. Akins words. Even Karl Rove's Cross Roads have pulled their funding from the Akin campaign.
What I see from Todd Akins words is an attitude about women who claim rape, as though in many cases they are not legitimate rapes. I take from his words that he thinks if a woman becomes pregnant from a so-called rape then it really was not rape at all and she was enjoying it instead. He of course, regretted his words later and admitted that he was wrong.
Fortunately, for us Democrat, he is not jumping out of the race. Instead, he's going to stick around which will help Democrats drive home the message to voters that Republicans want to tell women what they can or cannot do with their own bodies. I am also certain it will affect the votes of women and the votes of those who support women's issues.
The closer we get to November, the more the American voter will learn about what Republicans really want and what they want to do with our country and our rights if they manage to take control of our government this election and it isn't pretty.
