"Shake it, shake it Mittney!"
So, it didn't take long for Team Etch-a-Sketch to start erasing history. Despite saying a few months ago that he supported an amendment stating that life begins at conception - thereby making ALL abortions illegal, now that he has the nomination, (most likely), he's claiming that his position is that there should be exceptions for rape, incest, and protecting the life of the mother.
Meanwhile, his running mate is running alright. Paul Ryan is running as fast as he can from his record in the House of Representatives where he never saw an abortion restriction he didn't like. He has a perfect 100% voting record on the so-called "Right to Life" scorecard. And despite his claims today that "rape is rape", that hasn't been his tune for very long. He was the co-sponsor of eight different anti-abortion bills with Todd Akin, including at least one which sought to distinguish between "forcible rape" and other, presumably less rape-like, forms of rape.
And as with all things Republican, reality is still not what it appears to be. Despite the putative head of the party declaring his semi-moderated position on abortion, his party platform has not. They assert that life begins at conception and that abortion should be illegal in ALL circumstances - NO EXCEPTIONS! Think about that for a moment ...
The GOP Uterine Utopia - where EVERY pregnancy is a potential death sentence
This is the country in which the GOP base wish to live, one in which every single woman who becomes pregnant does so at the risk of being sentenced to die. This is no exaggeration. One of the ongoing uncertainties of life is that you never know when a routine pregnancy will become a threat to the mother's life. When a fertilized egg has a greater "right to life" than the mother who is hosting it, something has gone horribly wrong with society's values and belief system. Sure, we've all heard inspiring stories of women who chose to continue their pregnancies in the knowledge that it would likely kill them. These women are called heroines who showed the courage of their convictions. In the brave new world of the modern GOP, any other course of action would be illegal. Heroism would become compulsory.
Those pushing this are fooling themselves as well. The second their own daughter found herself facing this situation, it's a safe bet that they will be the first to find a way to get her an abortion. And like everything else in this world, the wealthy will always have access to safe medical abortions. Not so for the poor and middle class.
And for those who believe that today's statements signify that Romney will be semi-moderate on abortion, remember, the Etch-a-Sketch giveth, and the Etch-a-Sketch taketh away. Do you really believe a President Romney would veto anti-abortion legislation that conflicted with his, (current), stated position? Really? Wanna buy a bridge?
Is this a GOP War on Women? I'd say it is more like attempted genocide.
