Don't know if any of you are boxing fans. Those of you who are will know what I'm talking about when I say Mitt Romney has just turned himself into Check Weppner, with that cheap joke he told today about nobody ever questioning him about his birth certificate.
Chuck Weppner was the real-life inspiration for the movie Rocky. His nickname was The Bayonne Bleeder, because of the New Jersey native's talent for staying in the ring long after his face had been turned to hamburger by his more skillful opponents. He was known as a dirty club fighter, who's main talent was the ability to absorb punishment with his face. His big claim to fame is that he once knocked down Muhammad Ali. There are some who deny Weppner actually did knock Ali down, claiming that he stepped on Ali's foot, and that Ali tripped. Others claim it only happened because The Champ was not taking Weppner seriously enough; that it was a lucky punch.
Whatever the case may be, that punch woke Ali up - and he proceeded to fight the most vicious, focused and relentless few minutes of his entire career. No more rope-a-dope tactics, no more toying with an obviously inferior opponent, no more trash talk. Just precision blow after precision blow, until the reign of punches landing on the ex-cowboy's face had him bleeding like a burst tomato can.

This morning, Mitt Romney, the ex-Governor of Massachusetts, opened himself up to becoming the Boston Bleeder of politics. With his low blow about Obama's birth certificate, he may awaken the Ali in Obama, who has already been doing quite a tap dance on the hack politician's face.
People say that Obama already doesn't like Romney; that, unlike previous political adversaries like John McCain and Hillary Clinton, he doesn't respect the man, and actually relishes the daily beatings the Obama campaign has been meting out to the Romney campaign in a visceral way.
Well, if that's true, Romney ain't seen nothin' yet. Obama's about to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee all the way to election day. I believe he is about to administer such beating to Romney that, once this election is over, we will never see hide nor slick-backed hair of the man on the political stage again. I believe Obama is going to Romney so hard, and so many times, with such surgical precision over the next 75 days, that even his clueless descendants will feel the sting of getting in the ring with a superior foe - and the entire Romney family will cease being a force in American politics.
Good riddance.
