If you had to award someone "Statesman of the Year" naturally the first person you'd think of would be Donald Trump, right?
Well that's who the Sarasota GOP decided upon and last night Trump accepted the honor. And of course he took the opportunity to be statesmanly.
From Dictionary.com:
statesman
noun, plural states·men.
1. a person who is experienced in the art of government or versed in the administration of government affairs.
2. a person who exhibits great wisdom and ability in directing the affairs of a government or in dealing with important public issues.
Yes, both these definitions practically scream Donald Trump. And what did Mr. Trump say to the gentle people of the Sarasota GOP? He urged them to be "as mean as hell."
"I hope they are tough as hell and mean as hell and they fight fire with fire. And if they do–and if they're smart because it's all about being smart–we're going to have a great president of the United States," Trump said at the event.
His additional careful and statesmanly rhetoric included these observations:
- Team Obama is "bad people."
- Further, "These people are vicious"
- While some GOP businesspeople have admittedly "left people in their wake, and they've made enemies" that should be taken as a job qualification. Because "those people that they beat consistently over a lifetime...all of those people come back to haunt him."
"Him" being Mitt Romney. And yes, he did accidently liken Romney to Ebenezer Scrooge.
Trump's formal role at the convention was scrapped due to the reshuffling caused by the cancellation of Monday RNC events. But he is still due for a surprise appearance. Yippee!
