Sure, it's fun to laugh at ole Abe Simpson's speech last night at the convention. But I think we're letting Jeb! (the "smart" one) off the hook too easily. I think there's enough laughter to go around to him, too.
I could not believe his opening remarks. And I quote from Faux News (mistakes and all):
Thank you! Welcome to Florida.
(APPLAUSE)
Before I began my remarks, I have something personal I would like to share with you. I've been so blessed to be part of a family that has committed its life to public service.
(APPLAUSE)
My granddad and my father have been incredible role models for me and served our country honorably. And My brother, well, I love my brother.
Wow. How much does Jeb! hate his brother? Let's just pause and take that in. His granddad and father have "served our country honorably". And his brother....., well I think Jeb!'s silent thoughts might go a little something like this:
1. "And my brother, well, he was the worst president in history!"
2. "And my brother, well, he totally screwed me out of any chance to be president!"
3. "And my brother, well he didn't serve our country honorably, either in the military or as president!"
4. "And my brother, well he's always been a smug little shit!"
Then there's THIS little gem:
.... And My brother, well, I love my brother.
(APPLAUSE)
He is a man of integrity, courage, and honor, and during incredibly challenging times, he kept us safe.
emphasis mine
Jeb! are you insane? Where were you on September 11, 2001? Your brother didn't "keep us safe"! What about the Gulf Coast during Katrina/Rita? What about the soldiers needlessly sent to Iraq?
And you're supposed to be the "smart" one?
Finally, I just can't let this go, either:
So, Mr. President, it is time to stop blaming your predecessor for your failed economic policies.
(APPLAUSE)
You were dealt a tough hand, but your policies have not worked. In the fourth year of your presidency, a real leader would accept responsibility for his actions, and you haven't done it.
emphasis mine
The google machine makes it so easy. From CNN Politics.com, July 28, 2008:
"If they gave out Olympic medals for fiscal irresponsibility, President Bush would take the gold, silver and bronze," Conrad said. "With his eight years in office, he will have had the five highest deficits ever recorded. And the highest of those deficits is now projected to come in 2009, as he leaves office."
But a senior administration official says the budgetary problems stem from what he called inadequate defense, intelligence and homeland security resources that were handed down from Clinton.
Thanks Jeb! You've just thrown your dumbass brother under the bus, and then backed up over him. Really, thanks Jeb!
