"Qu’ils mangent de la brioche", that iconic urban legend phrase the sums up the attitude of a aristocratic monarchy facing the famine and hardships of class society gone totally unsustainable. Whether or not Marie Antoinette actually uttered that phrase which was historically originally attributed to Marie-Thérèse, the wife of Louis XIV a century earlier is immaterial~~perception then as now can become reality.
Romney's "Let them eat cake moment" is Andrea Saul's response to a Democratic backing Super-Pac ad (Link: New Priorities Joe Soptic Ad "Understands") where Soptic details a story where Bain's management and subsequent lay off led to him losing health insurance where by his wife got cancer and eventually died.
Saul's official campaign response was exceedingly as heartless as Antionette's mythical response during a bread famine: (Politico article)
If that family had lived in Massachusetts, it would have been covered by the former governor’s universal health care law.
“
To that point, if people had been in Massachusetts, under Governor Romney’s health care plan, they would have had health care,”
It is the typical aristocratic response we have seen from millenia;
Blame the victims for the events caused by those who exploit and rule.
In France's case history showed that the monarchy and nobles were actually manipulating the market so that flour prices would escalate as they simultaneously lived in the lapse of luxury.
One of the main causes of the revolution is known as the Flour War. Prior to 1789, Paris had experienced its coldest winter in recorded history. The heavy frost yielded low wheat harvests which further hurt flour and bread production. Marie Antoinette, along with other members of the court at Versailles, were believed to be guarding a secret supply of flour at the chateau to force inflation and therefore profit. When stormed by the woman of Paris it was estimated that many years of flour were found.
Sound familiar? Market manipulation, secret accounts of treasure and an attitude of heartlessness towards the common human and their plight. Essentially what Ms. Saul is saying as a mouthpiece for Mr. Romney is:
"It was your fault Mr. Soptic (and all you others we call "you people") that we were allowed to come to your place of employment and use your company's own assets to buy the keys to plant, then use all the equity in the company built over the years and fully suck out every dime of credit so we could then pay dividends to us the buyers of your sorry company that we have now raided. Then as the firm is now unprofitable by our greed we now have to let go of the employees and therefore your medical benefits which you had earned previously. Now if you are in such an impoverished that is your fault because you should not have been in that position of trust. And then if you moved to the state to which I became Governor and passed this Romneycare plan you would have been eligible for health benefits for your sick wife.
But remember I don't take any more credit for Romneycare because I call it Obamacare now and what is good for Massachusetts is not good for the rest of the nation."
