This morning as my 2 sons (6 and 8) were getting ready for school, I was camped out in front of my laptop checking the net for my daily news. I came across the now infamous video of Mitt Romney expressing his disdain for just less than half of the country.
As I was playing the video, my 8 year old asked me what I was watching. I told him I was watching the news. (I don't get too in depth with them unless they ask - and honestly I wanted him to get on with tying his shoes so we could head out to school) Usually, that's enough and they lose interest. But today, he asked me what it was. I told him about the election coming up for President. "Who's running?" he asked.
I told him it was between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. The first words out of his mouth were a question I'd been pondering since the Republican primaries...
"Why does Mitt Romney want to be President?"
"I don't know."
"Why?"
"Because he won't tell us."
"Is he evil?" My son's latest obsession is super heroes and he's just recently been exposed to Lex Luthor, who becomes President to further his schemes.
"No, I don't think he's evil. But he does have plans for the country that he hasn't told us about."
"Then I think you should vote for Obama. If he won't tell you, then it's probably bad."
"Like when you get in trouble in school and don't want to tell me about it."
"Yeah, like that."
I've been asking everyone I talk to about politics why Romney wants to be President and no one has been able to give me a satisfactory answer. I know he wants tax cuts for the wealthy. But beyond that? I honestly have no idea.
