The Republicans love to frame and present questions that can benefit them but often distract and detract from the truth of the complexities of a situation that could lead an intelligent person to arrive at the truth.
The Republicans love to frame and present questions that can benefit them but often distract and detract from the truth of the complexities of a situation that could lead an intelligent person to arrive at the truth.
And so they love to ask "Are we better off now than we were four years ago?".
How clever as always.
In short, the answer is yes and no.
The first major reason why we're not is because the GOP tried to block virtually every single good thing the President has put forward. How kind of the obstructionists to ask about the success of the things they've obstructed.
The second reason why we're not is because we hadn't reached the crescendo of the calamity created by the Republican Bush administration when this President took office. Everyone was hoping that we could start a disaster recovery plan on day one but the damage was still in full swing. The burden was lessened by the incredible work of President Obama but the scope of the GOP damage was still so severe and long lasting, it's hard for many who suffered to understand. Hard, but luckily not impossible.
The more appropriate question is;
"Look at where we are now. Would you rather be here and continue with a new plan or go BACKWARDS to the very policies that put us here in the first place?
The answer is a resounding "I'd rather be here and move forward, NOT go backwards".
So the next time someone tries to ask you "are we better off now than we were four years ago?" Just say "NO, we aren't better off in a lot of areas than we were four years ago but yes, I'd rather be here than go backwards to the Republican policies that got us in this mess in the first place."
