I was reading an article on Think Progress yesterday by Ian Millhiser about how the RNC wants to devise a different way of counting electoral votes, to make a Democratic Victory in ANY future election all but impossible. In the Congressional elections this past year, overall, Democratic candidates outpolled Republicans by about a million and a half votes, yet successful gerry-mandering efforts by the GOP enabled them to retain control of the House. In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus suggested that electoral votes should be allocated based on which congressional candidate carries each individual district, rather than upon which presidential candidate carries the state. Of course, had this plan been in place this past year, Mitt Romney's inauguration would be taking place next week.
Such a system, Priebus argued, “gives more local control” to the states. Now, aside from the simple fact that such a system would always result in every President having a "friendly" House (and we could debate for months on end whether or not that's a good thing), the control Priebus talks about would be in the hands of the PARTY that controls the state legislature, not in the hands of the people of the state. That got me to thinking about the world we'd live in if the current batch of Republico-Fascists actually DID get their way. Meanwhile, somebody on the TV was talking about Daniel Day Lewis' portrayal of Lincoln, and the following update of the Gettysburg Address sprung, nearly fully formed, into my mind. Now, all I needed was a place to put it ... well, isn't that what DKos is FOR?
One score and twelve years ago Saint Ronald brought forth upon this continent, a new notion, conceived in Board-Rooms, and dedicated to the proposition that all money is created equal ... and that government of the people, by the corporations, in spite of the will of the people shall not perish from this earth.
