Last night, Michelle Shocked, who had several hits in the 80s and 90s as an alternative folk musician, delivered a bigoted message against LGBT people at the popular club Yoshi's in San Francisco. According to live tweets from the event, she went on quite the hate rant and invited the audience to share her thoughts on Twitter.
”You can go on Twitter and say ‘Michelle Shocked says God hates fags.’”
Another audience member, @lisahubbert said, “wow, she’s a total bigot and said so on stage. It was unreal. We had to leave. I am so disappointed.”
@anile02 who was also there offered this: “She said she lives in fear that the world will be destroyed if gays are allowed to marry.”
According to
reports the audience was clearly angry and left en masse. At first some thought it had to be some sort of bad joke, but as she went on, it became clear that she was being completely sincere in expressing her hate for teh gay.
Shocked, whose real name is Karen Jonston, has been the subject of media speculation about her own sexuality for years. Perhaps this entire evening was designed to set the record straight, so to speak.
Raised Mormon, Shocked joined the West Angeles Church of God in the 1990s and has been cagey about LGBT issues in recent years, even though she had been frequently identified as a lesbian in the press. (A misidentification, Shocked claims.)
“I am a believer. I am a devout practicing Christian,” she told Edge on the Net in 2008. “I don’t like the ring of that because I know so many people who profess the faith, and I look at their social conscious, and I can’t see how they reconcile their faith with their politics.”
I think it is safe to assume that she has effectively soiled herself to the point of only attracting folks from Westboro Baptist Church, NOM and the Family Research Council to future concerts. Hey Michelle, don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.
