The previous Congress, marked by staunch Republican obstructionism to President Obama's legislative agenda, was even more "do-nothing" than the "do-nothing Congress" that Harry Truman railed against during his 1948 presidential campaign.
Well, the current "self-serving Congress" is more interested in serving the interests of their own members than the interests of those who elected them.
First, Congress passed, and President Obama signed into law, legislation that exempts congressional staffers from online reporting requirements of the STOCK Act, which prohibits Members of Congress and their staffers from being able to trade shares of stock on insider information. Back in 2011, 60 Minutes aired a piece which exposed House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Representative Spencer Bachus (R-AL), and others as having traded shares of stock on insider information. After 60 Minutes aired their report, Congress passed, and President Obama signed into law, the STOCK Act, which is designed to crack down on insider trading by Members of Congress and their staffers. Now, the "self-serving Congress" has watered down the STOCK Act big time to exempt their staffers from online reporting requirements, this time, there was very little attention from the mainstream media when they passed that bill.
Anyone who has ever had their flight delayed knows how pesky that can be, and one of the adverse affects of the sequester was an increased number of flight delays all across the country. However, most Members of Congress have to fly between Washington, DC and their homes in order to get to and from their own jobs, so they passed, and President Obama signed into law, a bill that completely ignored the other negative affects of the sequester, such as cuts to social services like Head Start and food stamps, and exempted the Federal Aviation Administration from the sequester so that Members of Congress could fly back home quicker. It's also worth noting that the mainstream media has focused almost exclusively on the increased number of flight delays and has focused very little attention on other adverse effects of the sequester.
Since neither Congressional Democrats nor Congressional Republicans are in any position to rail against the "self-serving Congress", I will.
