This week's Newsweek has an interview with Steve LaTourette, described as a former Republican congressman and John Boehner ally who decries his party's tactics. In the article, he gives away the reality that is today's GOP.
He makes clear that it is only the tactics that separate the "moderate" Republicans from the Tea Party, not the positions that the Tea Party takes.
"The attempt to link the repeal of Obamacare with the threat of a shutdown has unearthed a fault line that separates Republicans from each other. The divide has nothing to do with ideology. It's not about moderates vs. conservatives. It has nothing to do with policy: All Republicans agree Obamacare is bad policy. And it isn't about the Tea Party vs. the Establishment."
No, he lays out what the real difference is, "moderate" Republicans believe in telling lies to hide their positions while the Tea Party is willing to be honest.
"The real divide is between those who believe Republicans must grow the party to survive and win and those who believe we don't need to expand the party, we just need to excite the base."
Of course he couches those words by talk about reaching out to new voters, showing an interest in actually governing, and other weasel words, but the reality is if "moderate" Republicans have the same positions as the Tea Party, the only way to attract new voters is to lie to them.
"Former U.S. Representative Steven C. LaTourette is the President and CEO of the Republican Main Street Partnership. LaTourette served nine terms in the United States House of Representatives representing Northeast Ohio’s 14th Congressional District. In the House, LaTourette was a member of the Appropriations Committee and previously served on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee."
