UPDATE FRIDAY AFTERNOON: Eye witness account from embedded journalist, Miles Howe
Howe's is an amazing report.
The scene from yesterday
There are armed men, lying on their stomachs with rifles aimed at the tar sands/fracking protesters. In Canada, ay! Oh Canada! See pics
Here's where the protest is located: Route 134 near Rexton, NB, Canada. Notice the huge body of water here. This is the Richibucto River, fresh water, pictured here:
The fracking industry loves to locate near big rivers because they need millions of gallons of water to frack with. No wonder The Mi’kmaq Warrior Society is upset. This river is life supporting.
Tomorrow is the Day of Action
Suzane Patles, an Ilnu woman and member of the Mi’kmaq Warrior Society, has called for physical support at the blockade, solidarity actions across Turtle Island on Oct. 18th and a flooding of Kanadian official representatives’ phone and mail lines. The October 18th Day of Action is a response in protest to the court injunction that SWN is now enforcing against the encampment.
I posted this to follow jpmassar's diary in case it falls off the rec list:
Native Americans Declare War on Fracking. Canada Declares War on Native Americans. Updates.
NO THANKS NO GIVING: MI'KMAQ CALL FOR ACTIONS

Canadian Soldiers And Police Trained By Blackwater Mercenaries Contracted by Harper since 2006. Oh, good grief.
Apparently Corporate Canada also owns the police and.... are those soldiers or police?
October 17, 2013, 7:30 AM – about 700 Canadian police raided the Elsipogtog anti-fracking blockade in New Brunswick. Police have descended on a blockade encampment of members of the Mi’kmaq First Nation, who have been holding a weeks-long blockade to prevent the Texas-based company Southwestern Energy (SWN) from conducting fracking exploration in their lands.
Help flood the phone lines and emails of SWN to denounce their support for this violence!
Several people have been hurt and all of the Mi’kmaq Warrior Society has been arrested. Over 200 supporters broke police lines to join the blockade. Reports of rubber bullets fired, reckless use of pepper spray, brutality, all at the behest of SWN.

Great coverage of the story here: FRACK OFF!” Elsipogtog First Nation announces major land reclamation in ongoing anti-fracking struggle
“Harper and the Conservative government have lifted restrictions to environmental protections of our lands and water” and “the provincial government is turning over all lands… to a corporation for their own benefit… we have lost confidence in governments for the safekeeping of our lands.”
Sock added that “our notice of eviction has been completely ignored by the Provincial government and Southwest Energy, and… we have been compelled to act to save our water, land and animals from
I am a MI'KMAQ descendent from a mixed marriage in the 1600s when the French moved to Quebec, but I hadn't heard of the MI'KMAQ Warrior Society. There is a coastal town named after my very Great Grandfather. My people!
Do listen to this amazing music as you peruse the rest of the information below.
