First lady Michelle Obama announced on Tuesday that she will take on a policy driven initiative to promote all students to continue their education beyond high school. The New York Times writes:
“In her new project, Mrs. Obama will work with the Education Department to help further President Obama’s initiative to vault the United States from 12th to first in the world in the percentage of college graduates by 2020.”
All students deserve affordable access to higher education and we applaud Mrs. Obama for coming to the front lines of this critical issue. Currently, our college-educated generation is crippled with student debt, which has a crippling effect our economy. Mrs. Obama said in her speech:

“In her new project, Mrs. Obama will work with the Education Department to help further President Obama’s initiative to vault the United States from 12th to first in the world in the percentage of college graduates by 2020.”
All students deserve affordable access to higher education and we applaud Mrs. Obama for coming to the front lines of this critical issue. Currently, our college-educated generation is crippled with student debt, which has a crippling effect our economy. Mrs. Obama said in her speech:
“When the year 2020 rolls around, nearly two-thirds of all jobs in this country are going to require some form of training beyond high school,” Mrs. Obama continued while speaking to a group of students, “You all are going to need some form of higher education in order to build a good career for yourselves and be able to provide for your family.”
Mrs. Obama’s attentions are in the right space. Students need the support from those (like Mrs. Obama) who can promote meaningful policy change that helps to ensure that all students have access to higher education. And, since one of the main barriers to college access is cost, we hope that her initiative will make huge leaps in ensuring that college is affordable for all students.
More to come on this as her plans unfold.
