Friends in low places:
What’s Ken Starr up to these days? According to Virginia court documents, the famously pious former Clinton prosecutor recently pleaded with a Fairfax County judge to let a confessed child molester go free. Because he’s a family friend. Here’s the letter.
It was just one of dozens of letters sent by as many Washington, D.C., and New York City power players—including former ABC News anchor Charlie Gibson, a former aide to Laura Bush, a former GOP congressman, and a powerful partner at the insider law firm Akin Gump—who wrote in praise of Christopher Kloman, a 74-year-old retired Potomac School teacher who has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting several female students under the age of 14. [...]
Because Kloman was a well-connected teacher at a proving ground to the capital’s elite—the private Potomac School in MacLean, Va.—who was liked by the parents of the children he didn't sexually abuse, he received a bizarre outpouring of support from some extremely powerful Washingtonians, many of them begging the judge not to send Kloman to prison.
I realize that you have long been able to get away with nearly any crime so long as you were a member of the right social group, but this one was a bit much. Our ruling class may very well be insane.
Blast from the Past. At Daily Kos on this date in 2009—How Republicans Killed Capitalism:
Government now has a hard time stepping in to help not just because Republicans have taken the position of preventing government of playing its traditional role, but also because Republicans spent us into such a pit of debt that the government isn't well positioned to shoulder the burdens of business gone sour. We should be able to afford a stimulus plan much larger than the one already established. We need such a plan, along with direct intervention in the job market, and swift re-regulation of the financial instruments used to take the nation to the brink. However, the dollars that could have saved the economy were spent on building up a huge naval fleet that was never used, a fantasy defense system that has never worked, and lining the pockets of people whose pockets were already heartily lined. |

On
today's Kagro in the Morning show, the Friday grab bag mostly just had one thing in it: a fascinating interview by the
WaPo's Dylan Matthews with Joel Berg, executive director of the NYC Coalition Against Hunger. We filled in the cracks with a few other items, like the strange fascination with Janet Yellin's wardrobe (like we haven't seen that before), reactions to the healthcare.gov problems from Dems who lost seats in the 2010 elections allegedly over the ACA, Michele Bachmann's claims of having "lost [her] health insurance under Obamacare," and Rush Limbaugh's latest attacks on birth control coverage. (But yeah, that ad was kind of dumb.)
