Walmart workers are taking their fight to the living rooms of Walmart executives, by means of the ad above, which is airing in Walmart's home town of Bentonville, Arkansas. According to the worker who appears in the ad:
“Walmart associates are a family and we stick together. The fact that workers have to hold a food drive for themselves while working for a company that made $17 billion last year tells the real story of Walmart's poverty wages," said Martha Sellers, a Walmart worker from Los Angeles, CA. “The majority of Walmart associates are paid less than $25,000 a year, while the six Walton heirs who own the company are worth more than 42% of Americans combined. Walmart associates wouldn’t need food drives if Walmart just paid us a decent wage.
"I know that we can't compete with the huge PR blitz the company is running, but Walmart workers like me want to be sure Americans and our elected leaders hear the truth about what's going on in our stores," Sellers added.
Low-wage workers certainly can't compete with Walmart's huge advertising budget, but hopefully some executives will see this ad on their televisions during Thanksgiving week and give it a little thought. Maybe even feel a little shame, if they're capable of that.
