Second year in a row. We like them. It lets us do a turkey thing while being simple and tasty. At 77 I have developed issues about this holiday. I have become more and more conscious of the lifestyle it has come to glorify and I am more and more repulsed by the symbolism. Gluttony, dominance over Native people, and worst of all sheer neglect of the basic ideas being mocked. Turkeys raised on factory farms must make folks like Wendell Berry sick. His book: The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture. San Francisco: Sierra Club, 1977; Avon Books, 1978; Sierra Club, 1986. spells out our demise in great empathic detail.
Glorification of our relationships with Native people who we almost wiped out makes me sick. This year, if I were ambitious, latkes would also be in order. In honor of the years I lived in Israel doing my postdoc. But read on for more of my reasoning if you like.
I like the idea of giving thanks and we here have much to be thankful for since we exploited the rest of the world for so long. Unfortunately there are far too many among us who also are exploited. The take was not distributed evenly.
Family is another nice idea. We are going out to our favorite restaurant Southwind Pizza with some of the family tomorrow. They are closed today like all good employers. They have become like family to us so it is a double fellowship treat.
I have been looking at facebook and KOS and getting all sorts of feelings. This is a very strange day. Later some will enjoy sports. Some anticipate a buying orgy on top of stuffing themselves today.
We are a strange country. Our ability to see ourselves as we are is so limited. So the time to prepare the tacos is almost here. I won't stuff myself but I will enjoy the. I always enjoy my own cooking and love doing it.
We used to doturkey. We have a good source for organic meats Organic Prairie meats are shipped frozen and will arrive frozen. and we are using their ground turkey.
We are an independent cooperative of organic family farms, and true pioneers of organic meat production. We began producing our delicious meats—without the use of antibiotics, synthetic hormones, or pesticides—back in 1996.
Some little things that help us do what we can while being part of the big day. Enjoy yours too!
