The GOP-led Michigan legislature will take a back seat to nobody when it comes to
extremist law:
A controversial initiative requiring women to buy additional insurance if they want abortion coverage in their health insurance plans passed the Legislature Wednesday afternoon and will take effect 90 days after lawmakers adjourn for the year.
This is because it is intolerable for Certain People to be part of an abstract system in which some people might be getting abortions under the same insurance policy that they themselves have, and that instead of having it be covered for those that want it covered and letting those other Certain People simply not get any damn abortions, it is more important that nobody gets abortions, and every single woman in the state who
might need an abortion for whatever reason at some point in time ought to instead have to go out and shop for that thing and possibly wear a scarlet letter A on their blouse and/or make a pilgrimage to the office of the Pope of Michigan to plead their case.
And no, getting raped doesn't matter, thus leading to the now-canonical name for the Michigan plan: "Rape Insurance".
The initiative would require most private and all public health insurance plans to offer a separate rider for an abortion. And a person would have to buy that rider before knowing if they needed an abortion. They would not be able to buy the rider after getting pregnant by any means, including rape or incest.
As in, you don't get Rape Insurance from the state, or even from your own private insurance company (blah blah meddling in private insurance blah.) Your insurance will cover almost everything else that might happen to you, but not rape, because some fire-eyed busybodies think you might have
deserved that one, or at least want to have a say in what happens to you afterwards. By law.
Again, there are no similar efforts to ensure persons with moral objection to war do not have to pay for it, or persons with moral objections to the death penalty do not have to pay for it, or persons with moral objections to giving a set of decaying moral scolds light bulbs for their state offices do not have to pay for it. There's only one moral carveout that the moral scolds will abide, and that's the God-given right to decide what will happen to people who have sex or have sex forced upon them.
But we wouldn't want sharia law, heavens no. That would be imposing religion on people against their will.
