Jessica Levenson, a self proclaimed "Type A feminist mommy tech geek audiophile looking to be the change I want to see in the world", wrote the Upworthy intro to this poetry reading as follows:
Watch A Student Totally Nail Something About Women That I've Been Trying To Articulate For 37 Years
As a grown woman with a strong voice, I'm still working on standing tall and using my voice. I owe it to my daughter and other girls like her to set the example and respect my body AND my voice. Be sure to pay attention at 1:40 and 2:09 — Lily really provides some insight into how expectations for men and women differ and how much setting examples for our daughters really does matter.
The poem was written and performed by Lily Myers for Button Poetry.
I found I had to watch this reading several times because I would get so stuck on one line or so excited by the reaction of the audience that I would miss huge gaps in the reading. I have bookmarked the page so I can listen to the reading again. And again.
If you, as a woman, or you, as a man, have ever tried to articulate the most basic difference in the way we, as a society, have treated our sons and daughters in their upbringing, you have just been handed a gift on your road to discovery and understanding.
The only thing I ask is that you share this gift by forwarding this very worthy Upworthy poetry reading to as many people as possible.
