Back in 1997 Robert Mitchum died about a month short of his 80th birthday. His death was widely reported and then rather quickly fell by the wayside when Jimmy Stewart died the next day.
Yesterday, Joan Fontaine, born the same year as Mitchum, died at the age of 96. She had the unfortunate timing to die the day AFTER Peter O'Toole and mere hours after his death was announced. And, although Ms. Fontaine had quite a successful film career, starring in two Hitchcock films, winning a best actress Oscar, generally being quite successful throughout the 1940s and 50s, she is best known today for being the sister of Olivia de Havilland, Ms de Havilland having secured her status as a Hollywood immortal by appearing in Gone With the Wind.
I have seen several of Ms Fontaine's movies but I can't say I am an expert on her career. However I felt that she deserved a memorial here.
Sorry this was originally so brief - it was kind of a last minute decision to write it and then I had to run. As noted in the comments, one of the things Ms Fontaine was must noted for was her extraordinarily long-running feud with her older sister. I quite admired her work as the innocent young wife in 'The Women' and in the title role in 'Jane Eyre', playing opposite Orson Welles in an adaptation of one of my favorite novels.
