My Students: The best way to learn about life cycles is to see the life cycle in action! The plant materials I have requested will help my students observe the plant life cycle, then contribute to our school courtyard.
I teach an awesome group of special needs students. These students have limited academic abilities, but love to be included in the school activities. We are a high poverty school, with mostly inner city students. We have a courtyard the students can "hang out" in before school and during lunch. We like to keep the flower beds fresh and have the students maintain these grounds. My students really enjoy being a part of the bigger picture.
My Project: Inner city students don't have a lot of opportunity to learn about and grow green spaces. Providing flower beds and plantings allow our students to feel a sense of peace. The greenhouses and seedling starters I am requesting will allow my students to start plants to transplant into the flower beds. My handicapped students feel real pride when they are able to contribute to the school. Seeing the plants they produce being enjoyed by the student body would build on the pride and sense of belonging. This also helps my students understand the life cycle of a plant when they watch it go from seed, to seedling, to plant, into the flower bed. The posters and soft sculpt models will allow my students to see how the parts of the plant work and come together.
My students have difficulty being a part of the bigger population in our school. Any project we can do that helps them be a part of the school gives them a huge sense of accomplishment and pride, things that are so important to the development of these amazing kiddos! Although it is a small group doing the activities, the entire student body benefits from the results and the gardens we can produce over time.
