Sometimes news stories just surprise you. So, when news came out of Georgia about a history assignment provided to high schoolers, I was taken aback.
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Several students and parents at Kell High School in Marietta are upset about an assignment handed out by a social studies teacher on Monday.
The assignment asked students to find evidence for a comparison of Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin's methods of changing Russia from a capitalist country to a command country, to President Barack Obama's methods of changing the United States from a capitalist country to a socialist country.
Jay Dillon, spokesman for the Cobb County School District, told CBS Atlanta News that the teacher who handed out the homework assignment was a fill-in teacher.
After the assignment was brought to the attention of Kell's principal, the principal discussed the assignment with the teacher, and the assignment was withdrawn.
Story from AP.
Georgia has had a rough time with educational standards of late.
It was just a month ago that they were struggling with math questions that postulated how much work a slave could do for 3rd graders.
A Georgia school insisted today there was no “maliciousness” intended when a third grade math quiz asked students to compute the number of beatings a slave got a week and to calculate how many baskets of cotton he picked.
But the Gwinnett County School District has launched an investigation to determine how the offending questions made it onto the students’ homework sheets.

But, before you start worrying about Georgia, I have some good news for you. The south is no longer racist, in any way.
I know because a case before the Supreme Court said so today.

Shelby County’s lawyer, Bert W. Rein, says Section 5 is over and done. Quoting the court’s last ruling on the matter from 2009, he opened by saying that the record before Congress the last time around “made it unmistakable that the South had changed.”
And they will apparently seal the deal.
After the oral argument, Pete Williams of NBC News observed, "I think it's safe to say there are five votes to strike down either one or both parts of the Voting Rights Act."

Don't worry about those school assignments. There is no racism in the south. It's changed.
In today's fourth grade math, I have a word problem. Let's say Josiah has a plantation and...
