The Washington Post has a nice article titled "The Impact of the budget cuts depend on where you live and who you are" here
There is a state by state graphic called "Sequestration impacts, state by state estimates from the White House" here that is tabbed by a number of dimensions - such as:
Teachers and schools
Work Study jobs
Military "Readiness"
Law Enforcement
Nutrition Assistance for seniors
More below
As one might anticipate, California takes big hits across the board but some other results may surprise, For example, cuts in senior nutrition look like this by state:
California $5.4 million
Florida $3.8 million
Texas $3.6 million
Michigan $1.8 million
North Carolina $1.5 million
New York $1.4 million
Georgia $1.3 million
Virginia $1.2 million
New York is only #6 on the list; there are a lot of red state governors on the hook here.
It's even worse for military cuts - here is the gross pay cuts by state
Virginia $648 million
California $399 million
Maryland $353 million
Texas $274 million
Georgia $190 million
Florida $183 million
Alabama $176 million
Just a sample, but it is clear that the sequester may have a disporportionate impact on red state economies. No wonder there is a scramble to pin this on President Obama.
But seeing the numbers by state helps to see the causes and the impacts.
