Mission Almost Accomplished!
I owe you all a major update regarding slksfca aka Silky.
I drove Silky to the hospital on Tuesday, February 26th for his hip replacement surgery. He's been suffering more than a year in excruciating pain while all the red tape got untangled and rolled up neatly in his favor to FINALLY schedule the surgery and get it done. It's done. I found out from the hospital that night that the surgery was a success and that he was recovering nicely that evening.
The next day I drove his laptop and phone to him just after he had taken his first steps on his new hip. I winced as he was instructed how to slip himself back into bed. He reported that at times it was very painful. He had that look of almost passing out from the pain. But he gathered each time and worked through it. He was, however, too sedated to carry on a conversation in person. So I kissed him on the forehead and left. I told him to text me if he needed anything. He asked not to be contacted by anyone until he had more of a grip on his word recall.
He was still unable to navigate the innertubes the next day, all completely normal given the general anesthesia and dilaudid that was necessary to manage his pain.
On Friday he texted me and said that he was performing well beyond the PT/OT's expectation regarding walking. I texted back my kudos as I was being driven to the airport to catch my flight to Austin. My flight was delayed a few hours. During that time I got a text from Silky that the hospital wanted to release him that night! He had it all arranged to be in on-site rehab for several days after surgery since he lives alone in a three-story flat with no elevator. This sent me into panic overload. My flight was boarding so I texted him to call kimoconnor and if the hospital kicked him out to call side pocket and provided his numbers. I knew side pocket would go get him and take him home with him until I got back. I had an eye twitch all the way to Austin.
Thankfully, Silky managed to stay in the hospital but moved two floors down to "Skilled Nursing" to stay until I got home.
On Saturday Sara R posted a diary for the Daily Kos community to send well wishes to Silky in the form of a tangible gift. She suggested a Kindle Fire HD to provide entertaining content while he's serving time at St. Mary's Cuckoo's Nest. (Yes, he said the "Skilled Nursing" floors are much different than two floors up. He said the inmates pretty much run the place. It's boisterous, especially at night. Hard on a guy who really just wants sleep and not a chunky demerol margarita with a broken paper umbrella in it. Rubber glove balloons really aren't all that festive.) The diary raised $600 and it was lovely to see all the Kossacks so happy to support Silky in his recovery.
He checked in with me several times on Saturday and Sunday reporting that all was well.
Monday I made arrangements with him to visit the next day.
Tuesday, I scooped up kimoconnor and we made our way across the city to Golden Gate Park, where Silky's hospital room windows overlook the park. We found him in great condition. He said PT/OT was still completely impressed with his walking progress. His speech was quick and abundant. Such a relief after several days of drugged speech effects. He did not struggle at all. He said his wifi was CRAPPY and that's why he's not been online plus he's still getting used to the keyboard on his new notebook.
While we were debating the merits on the Kindle Fire v. his old Kindle we experienced a Christmas Miracle. Silky fired up his old Kindle for a demo and the screen broke on the spot. Kaput. No reboot helped.
Well, thankfully, a Best Buy was a four-minute car ride away. Kim and I scooted over, scored a Kindle Fire and delivered it to Silky in less than 30 minutes. He is totally set up. I'm so glad since he loved his Kindle and his effing TV doesn't work. He's probably still waiting for the hospital engineer to fix it. So glad he's got his new Kindle Fire and his notebook to provide some content until he's discharged.
OK. That's my update. My next plan is to visit and take him some pie he's craving. Kim is on board to make this happen with me, such a pal. THEN... when he's got the go-ahead to be released into the wild... Kim and I will pick him up, make sure he makes it up his three flights of stairs to his home. We'll stock his fridge with food to last until he can venture out on his own.
He's practicing stairs now and PT/OT is scheduled to visit him at home.
Oh and today we talked about an SFKossack event in the very near future. A Walk Through Golden Gate Park with Silky. On the first Sunday he feels that he's up to a couple of miles, which will be soon, now that his hip is finally on the mend. It will be a picnic event. I'll reserve a site as soon as Silky has a date he's comfortable with, so stay tuned.
So I think we're good, kids. Stay tuned. Silky is over the hump and it all looks like improvements in life now.
:)
