Peter Wehner, once director of Office of Strategic Initiatives (i.e. Office of Making Sure All Government Actions Serve the Cause of the GOP) and assistant to Junior's drug czar, has a plea to his fellow 'Pubs in yesterday's Washington Post:
GOP should stand firm against drug legalization
All I can say is, "For god's sake, 'Pubs, listen to this man!"
I'll not waste time ass-kicking Wehner's eminently ass-kickable arguments (pot is a dangerous drug that leads to addiction, only prohibition stands between us and a nation of reefer-mad desperadoes, government's job is to be a stern moral parent, Plato agrees with me, etc.). I don't want him refuted. I want him followed.
Republicans are, more and more, paddling against the current of public opinion, on matters of reproductive choice, marriage equality, voting rights, union representation, budgetary policy, firearm regulation, health care...
Sorry. I just realized if I went on with that list, this diary would take all day for you to read.
The point is, if 'Pubs want to shore up their base by embracing yet another issue on which their position is becoming increasingly unpopular, I, say Go, Lemmings, Go!
You've lost African Americans and Hispanics and women and young voters and moderates and just about everyone who can count to 11 without opening their fly.
Why not toss the libertarians overboard while you're cleaning house?
