Mr. President, please stop proposing cuts to Social Security.
I supported you April 2007. Knocked on doors in Iowa. Ran as a delegate in 2008, but did not get enough votes to be selected to attend the DNC. I supported you in 2012, and this time did get to attend the DNC in Charlotte. I really enjoyed being part of our Democracy.
I do not understand your current "position" on cuts to Social Security. I am 60, and hope to retire in 6 years. But with these proposed cuts, ny benefits may not keep pace with inflation. I have a son in his junior year of college, as well as many other expenses which will make it difficult to save much for our golden years.
I was counting on Social Security, and yet a Democrat, the leader of the party, the president I worked hard to elect twice in a row, is now putting cuts to what amounts to the last leg of the stool for retirees.
Please do not give in to this myth and give your opponents a way to gain more seats in 2014. For they surely will use this against you in races all over the country. 2014 could be worse than 2010, if that seems possible to think about.
I had your back in 2008 and 2012, so please have our backs in these negotiations. No cuts to Social Security. Please. Thank you.
I woke to a sunny, summer-like day in New York City. About to head home. I will walk 3.9 miles to the Whitehall Ferry Terminal to catch the ferry home to our apartment in St. George on the North Shore.
This would normally be a happy walk. Listening to music as I walk, burning up this winter calories and just relaxing on the way home.
But as I checked the DK site this morning, wanting to know more about President Obama's "overtures" to the insane right, I felt deflated. This cannot be happening. Can it? Why would this even be offered to the Tea Party budget gutters, who will not stop (I guess), until the entire SS fund is handed to some bank too big to fail to plunder, loot, and destroy.
My son voted for the first time last election. It was not for Obama. I counted it a victory that I got him to register to vote at all. Jill Stein got his vote. We talked about the "lesser of two evils," but I sincerely felt there was a clear difference between Romney and Obama.
I am not so sure now. Not sure at all, and this does not make me feel good about this party.
I remember the 2000 election where Saturday Night Live parodied Al Gore's "Lock Box" for Social Security. Maybe his insistence on keeping hands off the fund is what doomed him, as the SCOTUS tried to roll back what was left of the New Deal by installing the shrub.
I need to leave now, as exercise will make me feel better. I will try to reply when I get home. I appreciate any insights into this topic.
