The Guardian has done sterling work in not only breaking the story of the global NSA surveillance program, but also in suggesting how children's literature needs to be updated to reflect the realities of the current national security regime. Here is the Guardian's list of modernized classics: The Guardian's NSA Books for Kids
Below the fold are my own suggestions for how we can level with the next generation and stop regaling them with fairy tales of privacy and "freedom."
1) The Lion, the Witch and the War Drone
2) James and the Giant Sweep
3) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of REDACTED
4) Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret. --Yes, We Know.
5) Winnie the Snoop:
"Deep in the Hundred Acre Wood,
Where Christopher Robin's surveilled,
There's Rabbit, there's Piglet, and a number of known associates..."
6. Don't Let the Pigeon Run the NSA!
7. Make Way for Quislings.
8. Diary of a 4th Grade Person of Interest.
9. The Little House in the Big Data (My wife Ellen came up with that one.)
10. And for the older kids, The Lord of the Files.
