If you were thinking of seeing a movie this weekend then you can't really go wrong seeing White House Down. I know, I know, it looks stupid in the trailers. It is stupid. But it's also a lot of fun.
It's directed by Roland Emmerich, the director of Independence Day and it's the best movie he's done since. Easily. He's actually having fun with this movie and it's refreshing after his last two decades of disaster movies.
Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx are great together. They turn this die hard in the white house movie into more of a buddy cop movie. And that's what sets it apart (and just slightly above in my opinion) from Olympus Has Fallen, the other die hard in the white house movie starring Gerard Butler from earlier this year. Olympus was very serious, like the first die hard movie, and White House Down is a roller coaster.
The rest of the cast is great. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Richard Jenkins and James Woods. Jason Clarke adds a sense of menace if you've seen him as the 'interrogator' in Zero Dark Thirty. That dude just looks scary.
Look, if you want to see a serious movie, go see Kon-Tiki, if it's playing in your town. But if you want to have a fun roller coaster ride then go see White House Down. At the very least, you'll enjoy the way the director uses the film to trumpet his opinion about how to deal with Iran. ;)
