DK Quilt Guild: A place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too!
In May I was lucky enough to attend Quilts of the Gulf Coast, a quilt show put on by the Azalea City (Mobile, AL) Quilters Guild. It was held at the Mobile, Al Cruise Terminal (yes,
that cruise terminal). They had the best light of any quilt show venue I’ve been to – one whole long wall was floor to ceiling windows.
I had never been to Mobile before, so the day started with a trip to Cathedral Square, which has a farmers’ market every Saturday. Here’s the cathedral, and you can see some of the market’s tents.
The inside of the cathedral is magnificent. I didn’t think to take pictures, and should have, especially of the stained glass windows.
Then it was off to the quilt show. There were about 300 quilts hanging. This show was a little different than others I’ve been to. The entrants had a choice of having their quilts judged or not. I wish that more of the quilts had been judged, as I think some of the non-judged quilts could have been ribbon winners. But I also understand not wanting to have one’s quilt judged.
Here are some of the quilts that caught my eye. More than any other show it was color that grabbed my attention – must be all that great light!
This Storm at Sea quilt won my vote for viewer’s choice.
The color was great. But I also thought what a great idea the snail trail border, emulating waves, was.
Such a creative touch.
More color:
The bright orange Dresden plate flowers against the blue sky was so effective.
Applique is very popular right now, and I’m a sucker for flowers, so I really liked this quilt.
This wall hanging employed a lot of cool techniques.
And last but not least, I liked this wall hanging:
Look at those tiny pineapple blocks. The centers are paper pieced elephants. And the dimensional elephants! Just so much fun.
I hope you enjoyed the quilts. And as always – what have you been working on?
