I put this poster in the window next to my front door, so everyone coming to my house would see it. I put it there around the first inauguration.
I left it there through all the bailouts, and the treatment of the banksters as though they were not responsible for what had just happened to our economy. I left it there through 'cash for clunkers', which to me was an extremely cost-ineffective way to improve fleet gas mileage.
I left it there through the health care debate, even though I preferred single payer. I realized this was probably the best we could do, and a big step forward for millions of Americans, even though it was also a giveaway to the insurance companies.
I left it there through the Libya campaign, which had the fig-leaf of being a NATO action, but more importantly was obviously related to a realistic end, had a high probability of success, and in fact succeeded.
I was proud to have it there through all the crazies hollering about death panels, birth certificates, Benghazi (what were we supposed to do, anyhow?), and the IRS, which as far as I can see was just an agency doing its job.
And day to day, for five years, I was proud to look at someone as I entered my house who articulated a strong vision of a more decent America, a fairer America, a more tolerant and humane America, and most of whose decisions -- almost all -- were steps along that path.
I took it down today.
