The courage of gay teachers in Catholic schools inspires me.
Another Catholic school teacher in Minnesota is let go, because she is in a same-sex relationship.
The teacher said,
“I tried to figure out how I could encourage others to ‘make their mark’ if I was willing to be part of a community where I was required to hide and compromise and deny who I am,” she explained. “How could I ask others to give themselves entirely to the work God calls them to when I couldn’t do this myself?”
The school asked her to resign, but she would not do it. Instead, she was fired.
Finally, the teacher said,
“The kids who are gay in Catholic schools always concern me,” she noted. “I worry about what my silence for all these years has said.”
There is no doubt that the Catholic school had the legal right to fire her, since she violated the teaching of the Catholic Church, and she teaches there.
But there are deeper questions, I think:
what message does the Catholic Church give to gay people, who want to live authentic lives ?
is it Christian to put dogma/teaching above people who are striving to live authentic lives?
