The Council For a Livable World has endorsed Rick Weiland (D. SD) in his bid for retiring Senator Tim Johnson's (D. SD) seat and they give some pretty good reasons to get behind his campaign:
Have you heard the latest?
A few days ago, Republicans in the House of Representatives passed a bill that eliminated funding for President Obama’s healthcare reform act—the 42nd time they have done so. This time around, the Tea Party’s efforts received support from key Republican leaders like Speaker John Boehner.
Our country is literally being held hostage by Republican extremists, with the prospect of a government shutdown hanging in the balance.
That's why we couldn't be more excited to announce that we've just endorsed Rick Weiland for South Dakota’s open Senate seat. Rick is a progressive Democrat with a simple message: big money is taking our country down the wrong path. He’ll be a welcome ally against extremists who want to get rid of Obamacare and make the insurance companies happy by keeping millions Americans from getting health care.
Rick recently declared: “If the people who come to me fall into the category of big business or special interest, there’s the door.”
That’s a bold statement coming from a Senate hopeful. It shows that Rick is exactly the type of principled, gutsy candidate Council for a Livable World was formed to support.
With only six days before his next deadline, will you donate $10 to Rick’s campaign?

Here's what you need to know about Rick Weiland:
He fights for the little guy. Rick’s supporting a measure to raise the minimum wage in South Dakota. And he’s not backing down on his support for programs like Medicare, Social Security, and yes, even Obamacare.
He’s a progressive on foreign affairs and national security, too. In accepting our endorsement, Rick said, “The Council believes the light of America's freedom shines brightest to the world when it is not obscured by the fog of war, and so do I.” He’s been consistently skeptical about the U.S. getting militarily involved in Syria and other overseas conflicts.
He’s an underdog – but he can win: Just a few months ago, few people in the mainstream media knew Rick’s name. Now, even though he’s still polling behind the Republican favorite, former governor Mike Rounds, Rick’s numbers are getting better and better. It shows that he’s determined to win – and we think he can do it.
If you think so too, will you contribute $10 to Rick before the September 30th deadline?

Of course Weiland is grateful for the Council's endorsement and has mentioned it in his recent fundraising e-mail:
Dear Friend,
There are only 6 days left until we close the books on this quarter’s fundraising totals. I’d love to have your support in our effort to take the country back from big money special interests. Please contribute, so we can get our message out.

I also have some polling numbers you may have seen that surprised a few pundits. A national Republican firm (Harper Polling) recently released a survey showing that we are making huge strides against the candidacy of Mike Rounds who, for the time being at least, is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. According to the poll, Rounds' lead over me has been sliced in half in little over two months--from 27% in late June, to 14% in early September. So, what explains this change?
There a couple of reasons the numbers are moving in our direction. South Dakota is a small state. When a candidate spends quality time in small towns, conducts meetings that are open to the public and really listens to what’s on the minds of voters, people respond and tell their friends. I've hit over 150 communities since mid-July and held over two dozen town hall meetings that included Republicans, Democrats and Independents. And, I’m just getting started! On October 1st, our fall "Take it back!" tour will get back on the road with a schedule every bit as busy as this summer’s swing.
A second reason for the fact that Rounds' lead over me has been chopped in half is due to the fact that South Dakotans are responding to our message: the people’s government has been co-opted by wealthy, powerful interests which care much more about the growth of their own off-shore bank accounts, rather than the size of American family pocketbooks. Citizens realize that we have a choice: we can surrender to this reality, or we can fight hard to take our government back, to make it work for all of us, once again.
Finally, our campaign is picking up key endorsements every week. The South Dakota State Federation, AFL-CIO has endorsed my candidacy. I’m proud to have the support of our state’s working families. And, the nation’s leading progressive grassroots candidate from the last cycle, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren has joined a growing list of former and current Senators including Tim Johnson, Tom Daschle, Kent Conrad, Byron Dorgan, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, Tom Harkin, Max Baucus, Bob Menendez, Amy Klobuchar, Claire McCaskill, Jeff Merkley, Chris Coons and Tim Kaine. I also recently received the endorsement of the Council for a Livable World and the support of the Committee to Preserve and Protect Social Security and Medicare. This combination of tightening poll numbers, support from national political figures and progressive organizations, along with an increasingly competitive GOP primary have a lot of people taking a hard look at this election.
I can win this race, I know it--but I also know that I can't do it alone, I need your help. Please consider clicking here before September 30th and contributing what you can. I'm working as hard as I humanly can--I'm all in--and I need you to be all in, too, with me. Together, we can ensure that the fight for our values, the values that Tim Johnson has fought for in Congress for the last 26 years, will continue on. And, with your support, that's exactly what will happen.

Rick Weiland
