Congressional Republicans are certainly
persistent creatures.
Texas Republican Rep. Bill Flores said at a town hall forum Thursday that if the House of Representatives had an impeachment vote President Obama would be impeached. Flores said such a vote would be futile because it would fail in the Senate.
“I look at the president, I think he’s violated the Constitution,” Flores said. “I think he’s violated the law. I think he’s abused his power but at the end of the day you have to say if the House decides to impeach him, if the House had an impeachment vote it would probably impeach the president.”
Alas, he continued, the Senate would not vote for it so it would fail, and failing would be bad, since "if you try and fail, are you willing to put Nancy Pelosi back in the speakership? I'm not." The standards for impeachment appear to be "if we could get away with it," which seems a bit a stretch of the Constitution itself, but I am not a Constitutional scholar, or Texas Republican, or the Impeachment Fairy. (The audience is having none of that logic, because Texas Republicans, etc.)
If this sounds very familiar it's because it is: Texas (of course) Republican (duh) Blake Farenthold said much the same thing only a few weeks ago. Since then we've had Rep. Kerry Bentivolio saying that he's held meetings with lawyers about impeachment and is all set to go, except for the knowing what to impeach him for part, eternal crackpot Sen. Tom Coburn (part of the Oklahoma may or may not be a stain on humanity caucus) has told voters that Obama is "getting perilously close" to impeachment, and Canadian man with obvious presidential ambitions Sen. Ted Cruz mused that it is "a good question."
This is something they apparently dream about at night, leaving impeachment papers under their pillows in hopes that the Impeachment Fairy will come fill in the relevant lines and excuses. If only there weren't so many pesky Democrats who wouldn't vote for it, and so many damn members of the press asking what exactly was the impeachable part, they would have this in the bag.
