Um, ick. Before we get too irate about Michele Bachmann informing Jewish Americans that they're Doing It Wrong, though, remember that Bachmann is that special sort of Christian who believes that Israel must be destroyed to bring about the End Times. This necessarily tends to lead to a bit of a muddled perspective on her part—more muddled, even, than the usual Bachmannisms. It also no doubt gives the good people of Israel some mixed feelings of their own as to whether to embrace Michele Bachmann as an unsolicited protector of the Jewish people.
The Minnesota congresswoman told Perkins that Obama is pressuring Israel to “give up its land to terrorists” allied with Al Qaeda, which will lead to a “final war, destroying and reducing to rubble Israel.”
All of this is foretold and is a Good Thing because Jesus, mind you, so this makes her very happysad. Or sadhappy. Or just sappy.
She said that the Bible predicted Obama’s actions: “The nations of the world will come against Israel and the scripture very specifically says all nations, now for the United States we don’t have that experience until recently under President Obama with the United States not standing with Israel.”
All hail the Magic Conch!—er, sorry. Wrong thing.
Color me a cynic, but I question whether our Congress ought to be basing foreign policy considerations on their personal interpretations of biblical prophecy. Nothing against the Bible, mind you, but if I were an Israeli citizen few things would unnerve me more than knowing that a sizable chunk of the United States Congress was planning for the day my nation would be wiped off the map because they were convinced it would lead to Jesus coming to take them home to Cloud City where they would be reunited with Lando Calrissian and—no, sorry again.
Where were we? Right, the wrap up. Anyway, the lesson to be learned from all this is that the government of Iran is made up of irrational, right-wing religious zealots who seek the destruction of Israel because their personal religious fantasies require it. Don't question it, folks, just go with the flow.
