Teacher's Comments from Ms. Livingstone:
My Students: We may be facing record low temperatures and dangerous chills, but spring is just around the corner. My students will be antsy to get outdoors and have a little hands-on science fun. Disney, you can help my students learn about insects!
My urban middle school students do not have the opportunity to spend much time outdoors. They are not familiar with a lot of wildlife. Insects, however, can be found everywhere, including in the little strip of grass between a sidewalk and the edge of a road.
When warm weather hits, we're ready to embark on a reading adventure. We've got a wonderful collection of insect books. Please help us combine our literacy work with close observation of some real insects.
My Project: My students need two setups for hatching preying mantis egg cases along with the egg cases, two insect specimen sets, insect nets and magnifying viewing boxes, and colored pencils and paper for recording observations.
We will use these materials to learn about insects prior to embarking on a insect hunt on our school grounds. Once we've gathered some living specimens, we'll use the art supplies to make a record of our careful observations. A resident praying mantis habitat filled with newly emerged insect young will make our classroom the hopping place to be!
Sure, reading is important, and we do work hard at strengthening our literacy skills every day. But, once the warm weather hits, I know my students will be ready for something different. Please help my students learn that there is a thriving natural world even in the midst of a city. Thank you!
