The latest ad from GOP Rep. Tom Cotton in his bid to replace Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor has a simple message—Arkansans should be very, very afraid of ISIS. But even though that's a pretty simple message, packaging it into a visually compelling 30-second campaign ad is no easy feat, especially with less than two weeks to go before Election Day. Fortunately for Cotton, there was an easy solution to his problem:
The ad about ISIS uses footage directly from the group — a 55-minute long ISIS video, “Flames of War,” which was professionally made and features graphic content that includes a mass execution of a group of men who fall into a ditch.
So in order to terrorize Americans about ISIS, Cotton decided to use a propaganda video that ISIS produced in order to terrorize Americans. We will probably never know if Cotton is actually as terrorized by ISIS as he claims to be, but one thing is for sure: Both he and ISIS are using that video for the same purpose—political propaganda.
