Is this running scared or is it opportunistic? Possibly both
Harper's opened his speech to MPs by stating: "I know we will always stand together."
"The objective of these attacks was to instill fear and panic in our country. Canadians will not be intimidated. We will be vigilant, but we will not run scared. We will be prudent but we will not panic."
Harper pledged to speed up a plan already under way to bolster police powers in the areas of "surveillance, detention and arrest".
One loony results in what, more restrictions for everyone else.
How fast can you say
"Scardy Cat Act".
There are authoritarians all around the place, nothing like fear to enable stupid fucking laws.
Patriot Act anyone? [Plus others]
Now we have surveillance systems that only appear in the most dystopian Science fiction actually in place.
No fly lists, so secret you don't even know you are on one until you arrive at the airport, then nobody will tell you why you are on it in the first place because it's a national security issue.
In the past, we of the "industrialized world" were under far more danger of invasion and oppression than today yet our laws handled these problems with ease. Yet now we permit these few asshats to enable our governments to pass knee jerk laws.
Non stop fear and loathing issues from the idiot lantern in the corner, Ebola, Jihadis, and Santa Clause are all coming to get us, quick make up some new laws.
How did we ever survive before these new scare tactics?
Now is the time to say, stop this shit and repeal every piece of drivel created to "protect" us since 9-11. We were amply protected before that date.
