Obama has very little to worry about for the rest of his Presidency. He won't get impeached, and he has no worry for re-election anymore. As such now his priorities have completely changed. He is now worried about the future of the Democratic Party (which is questionable in the face of monetized elections), how his legacy will be viewed or... by whom he wants to have a positive legacy... meaning: How big will his corporate severance package be; or will he be known as a President who did leftist things in the mainstream eye?
He's already played politics with women's access to birth control and Kathleen Sebelius' decision on it. Nothing has changed regarding the NSA, he actually could still shut down the KXL Pipeline with an Executive Order now, he's also still pushing TPP and TTIP... So, what's up.
Simply put he's wondering about how he will be viewed in the future versus... How much money he'll get for doing pro-corporate things; what kinds of investment packages he'll be offered... The list goes on for the perks he gets once he leaves office.
His career in the public eye is not over, just his tenure as President is coming to a close.
I'd say, though the election was a setback... we'd still better all get to organizing. Pressure the President to veto every bill the left want him to. He still wants to make the Dems look good and he's still the figurehead and he knows it.
He's said he's gonna do vetos and executive orders... but I think he's full of crap.
In the end, even if the President doesn't respond to pressure organized around the issues... at least the left ends up more organized ;)
