A few weeks ago I explained how I was quitting Facebook. I don't regret it, but I felt the need to take it further because according to some Conservative and Libertarian friends, I'm not allowed to have my own opinion because employers look at facebook pages. With all that said, a few days ago I left these four simple words on my wall for all friends and family to see before opting to delete my account for good:
Dear Facebook, I quit.
It was nothing if not cathartic. There was nothing I hated more than seeing my friends brag about incredibly stupid things or post about first world problems or seeing drunk pictures, or worse, posts from the Republisphere.
I admit I was very outspoken politically on Facebook, but I also tried to inform people too. Unfortunately I've come to the realization that trying to do such a thing on Facebook is a lost cause because the site is over run with Republican and Libertarian wingnuts who would sacrifice the world economy and environment for the sake of petty ideology. It's impossible to compete with that.
Apparently employers hire and fire on the same basis now. I guess I shouldn't be surprised given that workers' jobs were threatened during the 2012 elections. Of course if you voted or posted pro-Republican anti-worker anti-union bullshit I'm sure employers were cool with it, especially here in Flawer-Duh. But apparently left-leaning folks aren't allowed to express anything. At all.
But Facebook is one of many sites, and as far as I'm concerned, the wingnuts can have it. I'll continue blogging and helping people here instead.
See you around,
Homer
2:49 PM PT: Aside: I may quit Youtube also, given the fact that Google runs things there and the interface has become a massive cluster since they took it over. But it gets worse. Youtube is also rife with Republican and Libertarian idiocy with very few alternatives in terms of content.
I also took the liberty of making DuckDuckGo my default search engine on my web browser thanks to a fellow Kossack's suggestion and it's one I'll be sticking with.
