The announcement in downtown Oakland. "That's it. No indictment. What ya going to do?"
This is 14th & Broadway, the heart of downtown Oakland, adjacent to Oscar Grant Plaza. About 400 people gathered to hear the "indictment or no indictment" announcement then did a four and half minute die-in (symbolizing the four and a half hours Mike Brown lay in the street) in the middle of the intersection. I'm in there somewhere.
Over the flip are tweets describing the Battle of I580, a freeway that runs across the middle of Oakland, separating the rich hills from the poorer flatlands. At least a thousand protesters were present. Many of them took one side of the freeway, began to get pushed off, took the other side, came down and then went back and blocked it again.
Late into the night, another confrontation erupted in downtown Oakland that resulted in tear gas and rubber bullets.
First, a few of the more intense tweets of the night from all over.
After the die-in marching began, up Broadway, down Broadway to the police station, finally heading North and East towards the north side of Lake Merritt and the I580 freeway.
The march reaches the freeway, proceeding under it towards the Grand Lake Theater. Through the tunnel and to the left is an on-ramp.
We have taken the freeway.
The 2nd taking of the freeway starts to form.
It's over. Heading back to downtown Oakland.
Around midnight it starts getting crazy.
Battalions of OPD unleashed at 1:30 AM
One last thought.
