I bet I won’t hear from the “pragmatic” Democrats who believed that we needed to distance ourselves from the President.
Alison Grimes refused to even say that she voted for President Obama. And went as far as holding a gun in TV ad and proudly stating that she, “was not Barack Obama.”
Soon-to-be former Senator Mark Pryor told Fox News that President Obama was a “drag” on his campaign.
Both of these candidates were absolutely crushed at the polls last Tuesday. And while they, and their white Washington consultants (such as Stan Greenberg) will blame President Obama, the fault lies not with a President who has won two elections, but with their own political cowardice.
The real story of the election was that the further a candidate distanced themselves from President Obama, the worse they lost. The thing that will be most remembered about this election will be Grimes refusing to say that even voted for President Obama. Well Ms. Grimes, here’s a fact for you: Almost 100,000 people voted for President Obama in Kentucky, that didn’t vote for you.
The Democrat’s strategy was so bad that it made “New Coke” like a smashing success. Even in the states where Obama lost handily to Mitt Romney, the Democrats who ran on the “I hate the black guy, too” platform got even less votes than Obama did in 2012. Mark Pryor in Arkansas, even with that state’s racist voting history, received over 60,000 fewer votes than President Obama, who didn’t even campaign in Arkansas in 2012.
The Democrats tried a campaign of appeasement, playing right into the hands of right-wing firebrands and got exactly what they deserved.
Last October, I accurately predicted that if Democrats tried to be “GOP-lite,” we wouldn’t have a chance.
But I’m celebrating the election. Never again can a Blue Dog Republican butt-sniffer tell me that Democrats have to be more conservative, and appease Republican voters in order to win. But, all we have to do is get out our voters, and that’s impossible when we run away from our base.
Only one, just one, senate candidate embraced President Obama with open arms, and guess what? He won! And won big.
Way to go Gary Peters in Michigan, your courage and common sense was rewarded !!!!
Tune in tonight !!!!!
