Well, I did some reading on just that.
This area of research is very difficult because we all eat such a range of different foods in such differing amounts. We have a clue about diet and breast cancer when we look at the rates of the disease in different countries.
Japanese women have a much lower rate of breast cancer than American women. But when Japanese women emigrate to live in the USA their breast cancer risk goes up. So the difference in risk must be to do with lifestyle or the environment rather than any inherited risk. The most obvious change is diet.
Researchers estimate that we may be able to prevent as many as 9 out of every 100 cancer cases (9%) by changing our diets. But it is difficult to be exact about this. Research also suggests that about 5 out of 100 cancers (5%) could be avoided by maintaining a healthy body weight.

I was convinced that now was the time to stop eating sugar. Maybe for good but maybe I could learn to eat it in moderation. Ever mindful that I am an addict and don’t do much in moderation.
I scheduled 6 AcuDetox appointments in a row; every day for 6 days. I really was serious about this and wanted it to stick (truly, no pun intended.)

These are the 5 points 1. Sympathetic: Calms the nervous system and helps with overall relaxation. 2. Shen Men (or Spirit Gate): Reduces anxiety and nervousness. 3. Kidney: used for detoxification through the urine, calming fears and healing internal organs, strengthening the body and the will. 4. Liver: Used for detoxification, blood purification, and to quell frustration, irritability and aggression. 5. Lung: Promotes detoxification through the breath and the skin, and helps clients breathe more easily and let go of grief.
I have to say this was the easiest detox I’ve ever gone through. I did have 2 days where I didn’t feel very well but nothing that kept me from working or day to day life.

I would show up for my appointment and Ann, the practitioner, would insert 5 needles into each of my ears. Then I lay on a comfy table covered with a blanket, a heat lamp on my feet and a cooling pad on my forehead. I chilled for 30 to 40 minutes listening to cool flute music.

When I was done, Ann put special gold beads in points in my ears for the time between sessions. I could push on these if I had cravings for sugar and the cravings would go away.

The cravings did go away. I didn’t change anything else in my diet, I just didn’t eat sugar. I learned that grapes taste really sweet and that I loved them. My skin became very clear and I lost weight.
After the first 6 days in a row of treatments, I scheduled them for every other week. It’s been 3 months now and I haven’t had sugar. I will say that discovering Lily Bars, a candy bar made with Stevia instead of sugar has helped, but I still like grapes the best.
I don’t have to avoid seeing sugar either. I can eat with someone who is having pie or whatever and I’m not tempted at all. I think I’m ready to go down to 1 treatment a month, and I’m still losing weight.
I don’t begin to understand how Chinese Medicine works or what it can do or can’t so I asked Ann a few questions.

I can say for sure that it has increased my sense of purpose. I got a lot more than just free from sugar and I think it will all help prevent my cancer from recurring.
Monday Night Cancer Club is a Daily Kos group focused on dealing with cancer, primarily for cancer survivors and caregivers, though clinicians, researchers, and others with a special interest are also welcome. Volunteer diarists post Monday evenings between 7-8 PM ET on topics related to living with cancer, which is very broadly defined to include physical, spiritual, emotional and cognitive aspects. Mindful of the controversies endemic to cancer prevention and treatment, we ask that both diarists and commenters keep an open mind regarding strategies for surviving cancer, whether based in traditional, Eastern, Western, allopathic or other medical practices. This is a club no one wants to join, in truth, and compassion will help us make it through the challenge together.
