Dear Mr. President:
This is a historic moment. The future of the United States of America lies in your hands.
If you sign the Republican budget bill, you will consign us to the status of a nation failing its people and our responsibilities, a hypocritical marketocracy that hands bonuses and benefits from the public treasury to oligarchs.
This budget flips off the American people, and hands our representative democracy to those who do not represent us. It fosters the ideal of buying elections with impunity. It tells the world that millions of Americans are excess population that we have no responsibility to employ, treating us like the citizens of Greece. It appropriates Apache lands for a mining company, without asking the Apache people. It takes away healthy food for school children and instead raises banks to the status of financial security, which none of the rest of us share. It tells the world that you honor the policies and ideals of those who oppose the ideals on which this country was founded as a moral nation.
This is your moment, Mr. President, to lead, to create a legacy we can be proud of, one so that 100 years from now, people can be proud of us - or not. Please do not sign this immoral, unethical budget bill. I recognize that you may not have the comradeship of Congressional Democrats right now. I urge you to get with them and create a good future, now. This is your moment.
I long ago despaired of thinking the people could affect policy in this marketocracy, but I write to leave my own moral record, and if I can do it, Sir, I hope you can too.
To use the time-honored phrase, the whole world is watching.
Sincerely,
Martha E. Ture
