Police union lawyer Alison Berry Wilkinson criticized the Richmond, California Police Chief for standing with demonstrators holding a sign saying "black lives matter". Her complaint:
"If his officers did the same thing, on either side of the issue, they would be disciplined."
(San Francisco Chronicle, December 14, 2014).
Either side of the issue??? I was going to say it was unbelievable, but unfortunately, it's all too believable. I also know the rep will say that's not what she meant, but it's certainly revealing of the underlying attitude. I hope those officers who don't share that attitude will get the union to retract, apologize and support the Chief on this one, however they may feel about day to day labor-management relations.
