I am disgusted by the proliferation of "Gay Bias" laws in the news - those last ditch efforts by the Christian right to carve out legal exemptions from the law in order to preserve their bigoted behavior. I consider myself to be as progressive as they come, but, in the spirit of compromise I'd like to propose a solution:
I will support their "bias laws" provided that any business opting to refuse service to any group be required to prominently display a notice saying so.
The notice would have to be a standard size and format (sort of like NYC's Restaurant "grade" posters), and it would have to be posted at the entrance to any business using it, as well as in any advertising materials. And as an added feature, the posters could be used to deny service to any group that "offends" the business owner provided each group is listed - gays, blacks, immigrants, non-christians, foreigners, abortion providers, etc.
This arrangement would allow bigoted business owners to proudly proclaim their views (you are proud of them, right?) while simultaneously allowing ALL members of their communities to decide whether they want to patronize businesses who feel this way. Fair enough?
Something tells me this approach would cause a lot of business owners to suddenly become a LOT more accepting.
